2. Congress Avenue Bats--Austin's Congress Avenue Bridge is the summer home to over 1.5 million Mexican free-tail bats. Their nightly exodus is among the most spectacular wildlife viewing opportunities in America. Bats are in residence from mid- March to late October and typically emerge just before dusk. 3. Oasis--The best view to watch the sunset while sipping a Margarita or eating dinner is the The Oasis on Lake Travis. And nowhere is there a more scenic view than at the famous Oasis restaurant, with its 14 decks hovering over the blue waters of Lake Travis.

4. Mt. Bonnell--Climb the 99 steps and savor a violet-tinged sunset over Lake Austin and Westlake Hills from the most scenic and one of the highest points in the city limits (785 feet above sea level). Open daily, dawn until dusk. 3800 Mt. Bonnell Rd. Austin, TX 78741

5. Texas State Capital--The Capitol Building recently underwent a $180 million renovation and preservation project which features an underground extension with open-air Rotunda. The grounds have been historically landscaped with gardens, statues and memorials surrounding the 26-acre complex. Tours every 15 minutes. 6. Zilker Park/Barton Springs Pool--Austin's largest and most popular park offers swimming in Barton Springs, a 68-degree spring-fed pool, hike & bike trails, playground, picnic facilities, canoe rentals and a miniature train which runs seasonally. 7. Zilker Botanical Gardens--The various gardens are a montage in which flowers, shrubs, trees and ponds are integrated into a design that provides an environment of inspiration, beauty and tranquillity. 8. Hippie Hollow--This is a clothing optional area on Lake Travis, so be warned. You have to walk a ways from the parking lot but it's not that far. Most of this area is shallow but offers a view of large boulders and a lot of small fish. It's a beautiful spot on Lake Travis at McGregor Park. 9. Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Research Center--A native plant botanical garden with numerous courtyards, terraces, arbors and meadows. 10. Parks and Hiking--Austin is very pet friendly and has many parks with designated "leash free" areas. So bring your four-legged friend and explore the local parks. Take to the 10.1 miles of trails at the Town Lake.
